Extractions

There are times when it is necessary to remove a baby tooth. Sometimes, a baby tooth must be removed to allow the permanent tooth to erupt normally. Generally this problem occurs due to the eruption pattern of the permanent tooth. We happily work with many area orthodontists to determine when these types of extractions are necessary. Other times, a tooth may have to be removed because it has extensive decay (a large cavity). Removing these teeth will help prevent the spread of infection into the bone and surrounding tissue.

If it is determined that your child’s tooth needs to be removed, a separate visit will likely be scheduled for this procedure. We will review the procedure and any available sedation options based on your preferences. This procedure is generally very quick and we will do our best to assure your child’s comfort.

The day of your child’s extraction:

  • Drinking through straws is fine
  • A soft diet is recommended; no eating of popcorn, pretzels, crackers, or any food that can get stuck in the socket
  • If your child has any discomfort, give your child a dose of Ibuprofen that is normal for their weight
  • Expect mild oozing of blood throughout the day
  • If you have any questions or concerns please call the office
